MR. STEAM opened its doors as Carpet Specialties in 1975 with the promise to provide Quality Carpet and Furniture Cleaning Services throughout Madison and Dane County Wisconsin. We rented a tiny office on the isthmus, bought some equipment with a small business loan, hooked up a new telephone line, distributed advertisements around the neighborhood and went to work.

MR. STEAM Carpet Cleaning owners learned as we went. We learned to answer customers’ questions:  What results can I expect?, How much do you charge?, When can you come?, and hundreds more. We learned what cleaning products, machinery and cleaning techniques achieved the best results day after day on pile after pile. And we’re still learning!

The popular Professional Carpet Cleaning Method in the late 1970s was either shampoo and vacuum or vacuum and shampoo. Carpet Cleaning Technicians back then operated a rotary floor scrubber with an attached shampoo tank, worked the lather into the pile, and sometimes let the carpet dry before vacuuming out the debris and soils. And it worked!

Professionally Steam Cleaning Carpets was unheard of until the 1980s. The first Carpet Steam Cleaners were big, bulky and ugly. The twin tank apparatus was pulled onto the jobsite on a wheeled platform and plugged into the nearest outlet. One tank held water kept hot with a heating element and sprayed through a hose into the carpet, while the other matching tank was a receptacle for the attached vacuum cleaner that sucked out the moisture and dirt. And that worked too!
